Moses, one of the greatest figures in Scripture, stands as a testament to the truth that God can work through our flaws. His story resonates with many of us who feel inadequate or unqualified, yet are called to step into God’s purpose. We often find ourselves hesitant when God nudges us to act, making excuses that hinder our steps forward.
A Call to Action
God first called Moses in Exodus 3:10-11, where He said, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” Moses’ immediate response was to question God’s choice: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” This response reflects a common sentiment among us—all too often, we feel an overwhelming sense of unworthiness.

Excuses We Make
Moses didn’t stop there; he offered a series of excuses, showing us that this behavior is not unique to our time. He expressed feelings of inadequacy in several ways:
- “I am not good enough” (Exodus 3:11) – We all have moments where we feel we cannot meet the expectations of what is being asked of us.
- “I don’t have all the answers” (Exodus 3:13) – Many of us hesitate because we feel ill-prepared.
- “No one will believe me” (Exodus 4:1) – Doubts about how others perceive us can keep us from acting.
- “I am a terrible public speaker” (Exodus 4:10) – Many worry about how they’ll communicate their message, especially if they consider themselves introverted.
- “I am just not qualified” (Exodus 4:13) – How many times have we felt that we lack the necessary skills for what God wants us to do?
God lovingly addressed Moses’ fears and insecurities by performing miracles to reassure him, reminding us that He will equip us for our calling. Remember 2 Corinthians 3:4-5, which declares, “Such confidence we have through Christ before God, not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.”
Finding Our Strength in Christ
Moses’ journey shows that while it’s easy to feel inadequate, especially in the face of significant challenges, we are called to find our strength in Christ. Philippians 4:13 reminds us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. When Moses finally stepped into his calling, he did so not in his power but in God’s.
The Provision of Friendship
What’s beautiful about God’s provision is that He didn’t leave Moses alone in this daunting task. God sent Aaron, his brother, as a partner in ministry. This serves as a powerful reminder that we don’t have to face our fears alone. In Psalm 16:5-6, we read, “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” God is with us, guiding and supporting us in friendship and community.
Embracing Our Purpose
Ultimately, Moses learned to embrace his role as a leader. He confronted Pharaoh with confidence, understanding that his strength lay in his relationship with God. As we step out in faith, let us also be reminded that our sufficiency is anchored in our Creator, not in ourselves. He is a Friend who will never leave us or forsake us.
When God calls you, embrace it! Step away from excuses and dive into the calling He has for you. Remember, He equips the called. Your unique journey, with all its ups and downs, is an integral part of a greater story. Let’s walk boldly and confidently into the purpose God has designed for us, bringing hope to those around us.
