In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to become comfortable in our victories and forget the source of our strength—our Heavenly Father. Ephesians 5:14 tells us, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” In a sense, just like the individual struggling with bipolar disorder who feels better after medication only to eventually go without it, we too can fall victim to the illusion of independence when life is going smoothly.
Proverbs 19:6 reminds us that “Many seek the favor of a ruler, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.” This speaks to the comfort we often find in our abilities and resources. But let’s be clear: without God’s blessing on our endeavors, our successes remain shallow and hollow. It’s essential to recognize that our true victory does not stem from our achievements but from continual surrender and dependence on God.
Proverbs 3:5-6 advises us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Much like a bipolar individual may initially stop taking their medication when they feel “fixed,” we, as Christians, can become complacent when we feel we have everything under control. As our spiritual wellness dips, so do our moods, attitudes, and perspectives.
What we must realize is this: dependence on God is not a one-time act; it’s a daily choice. Walking in true victory means being conscious of our continual need for God’s guidance and grace, especially during times of success.
Whether you are on a spiritual high or a valley experience, remember that without God, we can do nothing (John 15:5). Let’s strive to live in total dependence on Him—the ultimate source of strength and victory in our lives.
