Setting Aside Time for God: Finding Your Sacred Space

As you make the choice to become more engaged with God, one of the most crucial steps is to pick a time and set that time aside. Consistency becomes easier when you have designated moments for your connection with Him. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “For everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.” This reminds us that there is a proper time for every activity: a time to work, a time to play, a time to worship, and a time to pray.

Finding the right time for you is essential. Make a commitment to spend that time with God, and then honor it. This commitment may look different for each of us. Personally, my favorite time to connect with God is early in the morning, right after my CrossFit workout. I often go for a run or walk, using that time to worship and pray. Once I return home, the quiet of my “war room” is my refuge, where I dive into His Word, journal my thoughts, and simply sit in His presence. When I miss this time for any reason, my entire day feels off balance.

Imagine what it would look like to set aside time to start your day with God. How would that change your perspective? Maybe you find yourself praying while you shower or capitalizing on your drive to work. Remember, Daniel 6:10 shows us the importance of intentionality: “Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed.” The act of prayer softens our hearts and makes us more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings.

Once you choose a time, the next step is to select a place. Is it in the shower or your car? If you prefer to pray at home, find a space that limits distractions, allowing you to sit quietly with God. Sometimes, a park bench or the side of a quiet mountain can serve as a refreshing change of scenery. Personally, I often go hiking just to get alone with God without the usual distractions of daily life. When my children were little, my prayer time sometimes happened in the bathtub—wherever I could find that sacred moment!
In Matthew 6:6, Jesus reminds us of the heart behind our prayers: “But when you pray, go into your room, shut the door, and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Jesus encourages us to find that personal space to connect with Him away from the noise of the world.

Do you have a preferred place to go for prayer? Is there an area you could set up specifically for this purpose? Creating an environment that fosters intimacy with God is key to deepening your relationship with Him. Whether it’s a cozy nook in your home, a favorite chair, or the tranquility of nature, find a space that invites you to draw near to Him.

By intentionally setting aside time and space to spend with God, you open the door to a deeper, more fulfilling relationship. Take that step today, and watch how it transforms your daily life!
