As we approach the holiday season, it’s easy to get swept up in the joyous atmosphere around us. However, not everyone is ready to celebrate, and many are facing challenging circumstances. For some, this might be the first holiday without a loved one, while others might be grappling with health issues or family crises. Despite our struggles, we often come across verses like 1 Thessalonians 5:18 that instruct us to “give thanks in all circumstances.” This command can feel overwhelming, even impossible, during trying times.
However, the Bible doesn’t ask us to do something without showing us how. If we dive deeper into Scripture, we discover that constant gratitude flows from the peace of God at work within us as we allow ourselves to be sanctified. Now, the term “sanctified” may sound technical, but it simply refers to the process of being made holy or set apart for God.
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit dwells within us, actively working to transform us into His image. This transformation enables us to look beyond despair and frustration. By redirecting our focus from worldly struggles to God through prayer, Bible study, and worship, we can cultivate a deeper connection with Christ, as encouraged by Colossians 2:7.
It is through this abiding relationship that we become rooted and anchored in His love. When we shift our sight from our problems to the blessings we have received, we begin to recognize the goodness of God in our lives. Often, especially in tough years, it’s essential to focus on the small positives. Allow God to unveil the bigger picture of His blessings.
It’s perfectly okay to struggle to maintain a grateful and thankful heart during challenging moments. Remember, God understands your struggles and knows exactly what you are experiencing. If you allow Him into your circumstances, He will provide the strength to navigate through them, and when you feel like you can’t carry on, He will gently carry you.
So, approach God with an attitude of gratitude. Take a moment to reflect on where you are and consciously shift your focus to His enduring love. Remember the sacrifice He made by sending His Son to the cross for you. Look back at the times he has come through for you in the past, even in the smallest ways, and let that guide your thanks today.
