Psalms 46:10 reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” When we explore different translations, it can take on deeper meanings; one translation says, “Desist and learn that I am God.” The term “desist” calls us to stop fighting, to cease our struggles, to relax, and to surrender. It’s essential to stop trying to do everything on our own and instead recognize that God is in control, while we are not.
In our busy lives, we often overlook the importance of waiting on God and discovering what it means to be alone with Him. The Bible lays out a clear path for seeking God—drawing near to Him and waiting for Him to speak to us. When we earnestly seek Him, He will meet us in our hunger and desire for connection.
As we start to sense His presence and acknowledge that He is with us, we may receive a distinct thought or hear a voice that doesn’t align with our own. At times, these messages can feel unclear or distant. However, as we press into communication with Him, the Holy Spirit begins to bring clarity and understanding to what we once perceived as confusion.
This process becomes akin to conversing with a dear friend; there’s a level of trust established that allows us to rely on what is being communicated, even if it’s not the answer we hoped for. We find solace in this intimacy with our Creator, knowing we can rest in His presence.
Yet, frustration often arises because many perceive God as silent. Yes, He spoke and created the world, and He inspired the writings of the Bible. However, today, it seems even church leaders echo this sentiment of divine silence. This is simply not true. God is a speaking God; just as He spoke life into existence, He continues to communicate with us today.
In John 1, Jesus is referred to as “the Word.” The Scriptures are the result of a God who speaks—the same God who was with us yesterday, who is with us today, and will be with us forever. If He spoke in the past, then He is still speaking now.
The significant question we need to ask ourselves is: Are we listening? Are we receptive to His voice amid the chaos of our minds and the distractions of our lives? By learning to be still and lean into His presence, we can create a space for God to reveal His thoughts and desires for us. Let’s embrace that intimacy and open our ears to the wonderful truths He longs to share.
