Encountering God: Day Six – Silent Encounters

In our fast-paced world, silence can feel like a rarity. An inspiring story from the 1800s features an evangelist who was lying on the floor, crying out to God when he suddenly stopped his prayer and exclaimed, “Here lies a fool who knows nothing doing all the talking to someone who knows everything.” This powerful reflection underscores a vital truth: while we often approach God with our requests and expectations, it’s crucial to remember that He is God, and we are not.

We tend to fill our prayers with words, sharing our problems, desires, and even telling God what we think He should do. However, we must learn to embrace the wisdom of being silent as we wait on God. David beautifully illustrates this in the Psalms, particularly in Psalm 62:5, where he tells himself to “wait in silence for God alone.” In that stillness, something miraculous occurs: hope and expectation are birthed.

Silence is not just the absence of noise; it is a state of receiving. It involves yielding to God and focusing our thoughts completely on Him. However, waiting on the Lord takes practice and training. We must learn to take our wandering thoughts captive, directing them back to God, especially in a world that bombards us with constant stimulation.
In this generation, where distractions are at every turn, it’s essential to train our minds to become still and quiet. As believers, we are not just created to observe the world around us; we are equally equipped to delve into God and His ways. Setting our minds on Him and His Word is a form of training that keeps us aligned with His will.

Isaiah 40:31 beautifully reminds us that “those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.” This promise assures us that as we wait in God’s presence, we are changed and empowered; we can continue on without growing weary.

Practicing quietness before God may feel challenging at first, but remember, it doesn’t mean perfection. It’s about persistence. When our thoughts begin to wander—even after a moment of discipline—let’s not give up. Instead, we keep redirecting our minds back to God.

Today, I encourage you to take just five or ten minutes for a silent encounter with God. Find a quiet place where you can be alone with Him—no distractions, just you and God. Resist the urge to fill the space with words. Instead, focus on who God is, reflect on what He has done for you, and consider all the reasons you love the Lord your God.

Wait patiently for Him to speak in your silence, and treasure the moments of stillness where His presence can be felt most profoundly. Embrace this practice of silence and watch for the hope and strength that God will cultivate in your heart.
