Encountering God: Day 7 – Meet Your Holy Trainer

As we embark on our spiritual journey, it’s essential to acknowledge the role of the Holy Spirit—our divine personal trainer for the spirit man. Just as a physical trainer instructs, encourages, and guides us in our workouts, the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus to teach, comfort, and guide us through this life. His mission is to equip us to live for Jesus, drawing upon the wisdom of Scripture to help us develop a robust spiritual workout plan.
In Psalm 37, we find an excellent framework for achieving peace in our lives, laid out as a series of spiritual exercises. Let’s dive into these divine workouts and discern how we can press forward in our faith.

The Exercises

Exercise 1: Fret Not
“Fret not because of evil doers, neither be envious of the workers of iniquity” (Psalm 37:1). This first exercise reminds us to avoid the distractions and negativity that can arise from our surroundings. Instead of succumbing to jealousy or frustration, focus on the goodness of the Lord.

Exercise 2: Trust the Lord
“Trust in the Lord, and do good” (Psalm 37:3). Lean on Him, rely on Him, and be confident in His plans for your life. As we put our faith into action, we begin to see His goodness manifested in our daily lives.

Exercise 3: Delight in the Lord
“If you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Cultivating a joy-filled relationship with God draws us closer to His heart and aligns our desires with His purpose.

Exercise 4: Commit Your Ways
“Commit your ways to the Lord” (Psalm 37:5). This requires us to relinquish control and trust completely in His guidance—offering every moment and decision to Him.

Exercise 5: Be Still and Rest
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7). In a world that often encourages rush and anxiety, this practice reminds us to pause, reflect, and trust His timing.

Exercise 6: Cease from Anger
“Cease from anger, and forsake wrath” (Psalm 37:8). This exercise is vital for maintaining peace. Letting go of anger frees us from burdens and opens our hearts to divine guidance.

Exercise 7: Shift Your Focus
“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness” (Psalm 37:3). By shifting our focus from worldly distractions to what God is doing, our lives radiate peace and fulfillment.

Building Your Spiritual Muscles

As with any workout regimen, developing spiritual strength requires dedication and consistency. Just as a singular visit to the gym won’t yield results, we cannot rely solely on Sundays to feed our spirits. Our faith muscles must be engaged daily.

Roman 10:17 states, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” To fortify our faith, we must immerse ourselves in Scripture regularly—studying, meditating, and applying what we learn in our daily lives. This proactive approach allows us to grow in our walk with Christ, fostering a more intimate connection with Him.

My journey in training taught me the importance of consistent practice and nutritional discipline. The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. We cannot depend on others to do the hard work for us; it’s up to us to actively engage in our faith exercise routine.
