Who is the real Jesus?
Muslims view Him as a prophet, while Hindus and Buddhists regard Him as a holy man and a divine role model. Secular humanists respect Him as a moral teacher. But is that truly all there is to Jesus? What sets Christianity apart from every other religious movement or way of life is what we believe about Jesus Christ. This is a pivotal question for our faith.
When Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15), He posed the most essential question we can consider. The answer lies firmly within the pages of the Bible.
Matthew 16:16 reveals the truth: Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. It’s critical to understand that Jesus didn’t become the Son of God at birth; He has eternally existed as such. John 1:1 and 14 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” Jesus embodies what the Father is like. Colossians 1:15 describes the Son as the image of the invisible God—the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His being (Hebrews 1:3).
Why is Jesus Lord? Simply put, it’s because of who He is—the Son of God. But it is also because of what He has done. As a partner with God the Father in creation, He not only contributed to the formation of all that exists, He also chose to become like us—a created being. He took on a real human body, experiencing hunger, pain, fatigue, and the elements. He lived among us, and then He stood in our place, ultimately dying like a criminal on a Roman cross.
The profound truth is this: the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). He endured the cross so that we could be redeemed from our sins and our eternal separation from God. His sacrifice allows us to walk in the abundance of life, the glorious eternal life He offers, having destroyed the power of sin on that cross for us (John 17:3).
But the story does not end with His death. Death could not hold Him; He rose from the dead in power and glory (Acts 2:24). Before returning to heaven, He declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” By asserting His control over creation, He reaffirmed the truth that Jesus created it all, died for it all, and redeemed it all.
Jesus is Lord of it all. Our prayer is simple yet profound: “Make us more like Jesus.” Let us seek to embody His love, grace, and truth as we navigate our lives. In every aspect, let us show the world who Jesus truly is!
