Living in Our SONSHIP: Embracing Our Identity in Christ

Based on Galatians 4:1-7, Philemon 1:6, Romans 8:33-35

In Galatians 4:3-7 (The Passion Translation), we read:
“That is how it was with us before Christ came. We were like children imprisoned in the traditional laws of religion; we were held back from entering into God’s full experience. But when that era came to an end and the time of fulfillment had come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, and to rescue those who were held captive to the law so that we would receive our freedom and become the children of God. And so that we would know we are His true children, God released the Spirit of Sonship into our hearts, moving us to cry out intimately, ‘My Father! My true Father!’ Now we’re no longer living like slaves under the law, but we are children of God and we will inherit our all because we are His children!”

As we delve into the heart of SONSHIP, we must understand how profoundly God sees us as His sons and daughters. Living out of this identity requires us to embrace God’s perspective—helping us to reshape our mindset and respond to life through the lens of our divine heritage.

Declaring God’s Truth Over Our Lives

One impactful way we can begin to embrace our SONSHIP is by declaring God’s promises over ourselves in our daily situations. This is the power of our words! We must speak! Philemon 1:6 states, “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”
This verse encourages us to unveil the good within us that stems from our relationship with Christ. When we speak life, affirming what God has promised us, we tap into the transformative power of SONSHIP. We are joint heirs with Jesus, sharing in His inheritance—not as lesser heirs, but as full participants in all that He has provided (Romans 8:17). We must trust in this truth; thus, we start to live out of this identity. How did Jesus exercise His authority–He spoke.
Consider the authority we observe in Jesus’ commands—He said, “Be healed,” to the sick; “Get up and walk,” to the paralyzed; to demons, He simply commanded, “Come out.” And to the raging storms, He said, “Be still.” Our identity as children of God carries similar authority; we have been granted dominion over all creation (Genesis 1:26-28).

The enemy will attempt to sow seeds of doubt in our minds regarding our identities. There will undoubtedly be days of struggle and disappointment, moments when the voice of the adversary taunts us with the question: “Who are you?” In these times, we must remain steadfast in our identity, clinging to the truth of who we are as beloved children of the God.

Standing Firm in Our Identity

It is vital to understand that our actions do not earn our position as children of God. We do not grow into SONSHIP; we believe into SONSHIP. This divine privilege is a gift received through faith in Jesus Christ. Our mistakes do not nullify our identity or our rightful position as children of God, as affirmed in Romans 8:33-35, where Paul writes:
“Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”

Our SONSHIP provides us with security and access to our inheritance in Christ. Even when we face trials, our standing as sons and daughters remains firm. Our childhood, with all its lack of understanding about authority, does not strip us of that authority. It’s like a buffet; God has laid out an abundant spread for us, and it’s up to us how much we choose to partake in His goodness and grace.

Daily Declarations of SONSHIP

To live out of this truth, we can use declarations that affirm our SONSHIP. Speaking these truths over our lives cultivates faith that encourages us to walk in the fullness of our inheritance. Here are some declarations to consider making daily:

  1. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
  2. I am redeemed. (Colossians 1:14)
  3. I am a son of God; ABBA is my Father. (Galatians 4:6, Romans 8:15)
  4. I am completely forgiven. (Ephesians 1:7)
  5. I am restored to right relationship with God. (2 Corinthians 5:18)
  6. I am passionately loved by God. (John 3:16, Romans 8:38-39)
  7. I am powerfully helped by God. (Psalm 46:1)
  8. I have angelic assistance. (Hebrews 1:14)
  9. I am irrevocably blessed. (Ephesians 1:3)
  10. I live in eternal life; it is my life. (John 3:36)
  11. I am forgiven, and I am healed, walking in divine health. (Isaiah 53:5)
  12. I have the favor and wisdom of God. (James 1:5)
  13. I am fruitful; I flourish, excel, and prosper in all I do. (Psalm 1:3)
  14. I have the multiplier anointing. (Matthew 25:29)
  15. Nothing is against me. Nothing dies in my hands. (Romans 8:31)
  16. The supernatural is natural to me. (Mark 16:17-18)
  17. God loves me more than the devil hates me. (1 John 4:4)
  18. Grace is working for me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
  19. All things work out for my good because I am called by God. (Romans 8:28)

Conclusion: Living Out Our Inheritance

Embracing our SONSHIP requires not only acceptance but also an active expression and embodiment of that identity in every facet of our lives. By aligning our beliefs and declarations with Scripture, we nurture a deeper understanding of who we are and draw closer to the heart of our Father.
As we walk through the challenges of life, we cans rest in the knowledge that our identity as children of God is unshakeable. It is a gift not based on our actions, maturity, or achievements, but rather anchored in the unchanging love and grace of God.
We need to continually remind ourselves of our SONSHIP, boldly declaring these truths daily as we step into the fullness of our inheritance in Christ. As we do so, we become vessels of His power, impacting the world around us while confidently living out the beautiful identity of being a beloved son or daughter of the King.
