Proverbs 3:5–6; James 1:5
The end of the year is a natural moment for reflection. We review the highs and lows, the lessons learned, the prayers answered—or seemingly unanswered. But it’s also a moment to set intention. Not just to make resolutions, but to listen for God’s direction for the year ahead.
Many people choose a “word of the year” instead of a long list of goals. This is a single word that captures the focus they want to carry forward—a spiritual compass to guide decisions, attitudes, and priorities.
Why Choose a Word of the Year?
A word of the year keeps us rooted in God’s direction. Unlike resolutions that often rely on willpower, this word invites God to speak and lead. It reminds us daily of our purpose, helping us pause, reflect, and make decisions that align with His will.
Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
Choosing a word allows us to focus on trusting God instead of leaning on our own understanding.
How to Listen for Your Word
- Reflect on the past year: What lessons did God teach you? Where did you grow? Where do you still need His guidance?
- Pray intentionally: Ask God for a word that will shape your heart and your steps. Listen for the impression He leaves—often it’s a single word that resonates.
- Journal your thoughts: Writing can help clarify what God is highlighting for you.
It might be a word like faith, courage, patience, discipline, or joy. Or God may give something surprising, something that nudges you to grow in a way you hadn’t expected.
Living Your Word in 2026
Once you have your word, consider ways to embed it into your daily life:
- Place reminders around your home or workspace.
- Pray over your word each morning.
- Use it to evaluate decisions: Does this align with my word?
- Share it with a friend or accountability partner.
James 1:5 reminds us:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
Your word becomes a guidepost, helping you seek God’s wisdom and direction throughout the year.
Reflection for Today
Take a moment to pause before 2026 begins. Ask God:
- What do You want me to focus on this year?
- Where do I need Your guidance most?
- How can I make space in my life to notice and respond to You daily?
Your word is a seed. When nurtured with prayer, Scripture, and attentiveness, it can grow into a year marked by intentionality and divine guidance.
Prayer
Lord, guide me as I enter this new year. Give me a word that will shape my heart and direct my steps. Help me to trust You fully, lean on Your understanding, and follow Your guidance daily. Amen.
