Counting the Cost of Discipleship: Understanding the Price of Following Christ

Discipleship is a powerful commitment, one that not only transforms our lives but demands a significant cost. In 1 Thessalonians 3:3, the Apostle Paul reminds us that we should not be surprised when we face trials and challenges for our faith. This sentiment is echoed in Acts 9:16, where God tells Ananias, “I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” From these scriptures, it is clear that there is an expectation that trials will come as we walk the path of discipleship.

In Luke 14:25-31, Jesus emphasizes the importance of counting the cost before committing to such a significant undertaking. He poses the question: who builds a house without estimating the expense? Would you start construction without first figuring out if you can afford it? The same principle applies to our commitment to follow Christ. If we don’t take the time to understand the fullness of what discipleship entails, we run the risk of becoming partially invested and not being able to finish what we began, ultimately leading others to question our sincerity.

The great missionary David Livingstone exemplified this commitment. He stated, “If a commission by an earthly king is an honor, how can a commission by a heavenly King be considered a sacrifice?” If you received a call for a mission from the President of your country, you would likely perceive it as a privilege. Yet, when God calls us to serve Him, we might view it as a burden or sacrifice. It’s essential to remember that while salvation is indeed free—paid for by the blood of Jesus—being a disciple of Christ comes with expectations. We are called to lay down our lives for Him.

As we delve deeper, we see that Jesus demands first place in our hearts and lives. He will not settle for second place, for God is a jealous God. Accepting Christ involves a realization that there is a price to be paid. Dr. Billy Graham aptly reminded us that Jesus promised His disciples three essential things: they would be fearless, they would experience profound joy, and they would encounter trials and persecution. While many of us earnestly desire the first two—fearlessness and happiness—we often shy away from the third promise.

In today’s reality, particularly within the American church, there seems to be a growing trend of followers seeking to enjoy the benefits of a relationship with Christ without fully embracing the cost of true discipleship. We live in a culture that often prioritizes fame and personal success over a deep, sacrificial relationship with God. Many want to grasp the promises of abundance while ignoring the inevitability of trials and challenges. This dichotomy doesn’t exist; you cannot harvest spiritual joy without acknowledging the suffering that accompanies it.

Persecution is not confined to distant lands; it is a daily reality for many believers everywhere, including America. For us, the idea of paying a price for our faith should feel as integral as breathing itself. The reality is that our message about Christ is not merely meant to soothe or entertain. Instead, it holds the potential to provoke, challenge, and ultimately transform lives through the power of the Holy Spirit for God’s glory.
So, what does it truly cost to follow Christ? Are you ready to ask yourself what price you are willing to pay? Discipleship requires more than just an occasional prayer or Sunday attendance; it demands a life committed to obedience, sacrifice, and the willingness to endure trials for the sake of His name.

As you reflect on these truths, consider how you can fully count the cost and respond to Christ’s calling in your life. Embrace the journey of discipleship, knowing the price you pay will lead to the richest of rewards—both here on earth and in eternity.
