In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul paints a vivid picture of the Christian life, likening it not to a quick sprint, but to a marathon, an escape from the mentality that life in Christ is just a series of high points. Philippians 3:12-14 provides a powerful reminder that our journey with Christ requires endurance and commitment. Paul writes, “Not that I have already obtained it or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.”
The word “press” here is significant. Translated from Greek, it means to apply pressure, to use force, and to push through the challenges we encounter. In our spiritual journeys, pressing on signifies more than merely keeping pace; it involves an active determination to move forward despite obstacles, fatigue, or discouragement.
Many of us dream of a life filled with spiritual mountain tops—experiences of sanctification that seem to come easily. However, the truth is, spiritual growth often occurs in the valleys where we are pressed. It’s akin to running a lap and feeling satisfied with our performance, only to hear “on your mark, get set, go!” again. Running this race means that we continuously push beyond what we think we can achieve.
In verse 14, Paul emphasizes his purpose: he presses on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. His words resonate a profound sense of direction; it’s not merely about completing a race, but about striving for a divine prize—the eternal life and relationship promised by God. Paul is running with intention, eager for the reward that has been set aside for him since before the creation of the world. He understood that while Christ has already possessed him, he must actively pursue the fullness of that relationship, the heavenly prize that awaits.
But how do we run this race effectively? Philippians 3:13 provides vital insight: “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.” This encapsulates the essence of our journey. To advance in our faith, we must release the burdens of our past—be they failures, regrets, or even past successes that might inhibit our growth. We cannot keep glancing over our shoulders if we genuinely wish to sprint into the future that God has mapped out for us.
God invites us, even now, into a posture of surrender. His call to press on amidst life’s challenges is rooted in an understanding that we cannot navigate the race alone. Rest in the knowledge that He is beside us, fueling our desire to move forward, urging us to let go of what was and to step boldly into what is meant to be.
So, are you ready to press on toward the mark that Jesus has set for you? Each step, each breath in this endurance race leads us closer to the ultimate prize—the life we are promised in Him. Let us embrace the journey, acknowledging both the trials and triumphs, as we continue to press forward in faith, striving for that heavenly home.
