In Christ Day 1: I Am Brand New

Have you ever been asked the question, “Who do you think you are?” It’s a loaded query that can easily put us on the defensive, making us feel like we’ve said or done something wrong. Yet, what if this question was asked with genuine interest? Reflecting on our identity can lead us deep into who we truly are at our core.

Let me introduce myself: I am Trisha Baxter. I wear many hats—I’m a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a student, a teacher, a child of God, a pastor, a runner, and yes, I’m also a baker. I love running because it allows me to enjoy all the goodies I bake! This array of roles shapes my identity as it does for many of us. Our identities often stem from our relationships, hobbies, histories, and interests.

Over the next several weeks, I invite you to embark with me on a journey to discover something profound: our identity in Christ. As Christians, we have been made brand new, but what does this truly entail? What does God say about who we are, and what roles and titles does He bestow upon us? Furthermore, how does knowing God impact our identities?

Today, let’s explore the powerful message in 2 Corinthians 5:17, where the Apostle Paul reminds us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This scripture encourages us to step boldly into the truth of our new identity. It’s easy to cling to the past and let our mistakes overshadow who we have become, but we have to remember—the old is gone, and the new has arrived.

Consider the transition from the old to the new as a rebirth. When we say we are born again, think about the innocence of a brand new baby at birth—that is precisely how our Father sees us in our new identity. However, it can be challenging to view ourselves this way, especially when we stumble and stumble again. It’s essential to turn our gaze inward to recognize the transformation God is orchestrating within us. And let’s extend that grace to those around us who are also in Christ, who may be on their journey of transformation.

So how do we embrace this new identity today? If you’re looking for a focal verse for your study, consider spending time with 2 Corinthians 5:17. Let’s apply the S.O.A.P. method for reflection:

  1. Scripture: Write out the verse for clarity.
  2. Observation: Reflect on what the verse reveals about our new identity.
  3. Application: How does this scripture pertain to your life today?
  4. Prayer: Engage in prayer, asking God to help you understand and live out this truth.
As we step into this journey together, let’s celebrate who God has made us to be—brand new in Christ. Let the truth of His word guide us as we uncover the depths of our identity, one day at a time.
