As we dive into Day 12, let’s take a moment to reflect on the incredible truth that we are chosen. The affirmation of our identity in Christ is rooted in Scripture, particularly in Ephesians 1:4 and 1 Peter 2:9.
The latter verse beautifully declares: “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of His own, that you may proclaim the virtues of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” This powerful passage invites us to uncover the depth of what it means to be chosen by God.
To truly grasp this, we need to become modern-day Bereans, digging into the Word to uncover its richest meanings. And trust me—what I discovered during my study surprised me! So, buckle up as we dive deeper.
Peter intentionally references several Old Testament passages to underline his point. For instance, Exodus 19:5-6 describes the people of Israel as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Isaiah 43:20-21 speaks of God’s chosen people, and Malachi 3:17 reassures us that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies calls us His own.
One word that caught my eye was the Greek term translated as “peculiar” in 1 Peter 2:9. In this context, it doesn’t mean “strange” or “odd” like we might normally think. Instead, it refers to something even more profound: “His treasured possession.” That’s right! We are God’s treasured possession—a chosen people.
While the early Jewish church understood they were God’s chosen ones, Peter boldly extends this identity to all Christians, including Gentiles (non-Jews). This was essential for unity and identity within the early church, and it holds just as true today.
In our world, we may not grapple with Jew versus Gentile issues, but we often see divides based on race, culture, or even denominations. God’s love transcends all of that. He embraces everyone—regardless of skin color, whether you identify as Baptist, Lutheran, or Pentecostal. The only requirement is that we come to Him through Jesus and lead lives that are set apart for His purpose.
The world tries to label us as unwanted, insignificant, ordinary, or unworthy. But in Christ, everything changes. We are not just ordinary; we are a royal priesthood with a divine purpose. We are called His chosen children.
Today, let’s embrace our identity as God’s royal priesthood. Let’s rise to the occasion and share the love of Christ with the world around us. This is our invitation, and it starts with the powerful statement:
So, as you reflect on this truth, remember that you are part of something much bigger than yourself. Stand firm in your identity, shine His light, and live out your purpose as a cherished member of His chosen generation.
