As we reflect on the profound message of being known by God , we turn our attention to the powerful words found in Psalms 139:1-3 and 1 Corinthians 8:3. David begins by proclaiming, “Lord, you have searched me and known me.” This sentiment resonates deeply with all of us, as it speaks to the heart of our relationship with God.
In our human relationships, we often think we know someone intimately. For instance, after dating someone for a long time, we might feel like we have a solid grasp of their character. Yet, once we marry, we sometimes encounter surprises—stories from their childhood, past struggles, or even favorite dishes their mothers used to cook. My husband and I have been married for 20 years, and we’re still unearthing new details about each other. It’s a continual adventure of discovery.
However, with God, it is vastly different. While we may have to observe and interact with those around us to understand them, God knows us fully—inside and out. David reminds us that God searches us and intimately understands our ways. This realization can be both comforting and intimidating. God isn’t just aware of the significant events in our lives; He knows the minutiae, such as when we sit and when we lie down, as well as when our hearts are heavy or when we grapple with our own attitudes.
Psalms 139:7-11 deepens this understanding by stating that there is nowhere we can hide from God. Yet, there can be times when we pull away from God out of fear, similar to how we might withdraw from certain individuals in our lives. Sometimes, the more we learn about someone, the less inclined we may be to be around them. The thought that God might react like some of those people can lead to trepidation.
But here’s the beautiful truth: God is not like that. He sees us in our entirety, with all our flaws and imperfections, yet He loves us unconditionally. Despite our mistakes and shortcomings, He invites us to be real with Him—not for His benefit but for ours. In our lostness due to sin, He made the ultimate sacrifice by sending His Son to die for us so we could be reunited with Him, forever becoming a part of His divine family.
Every day, we should pray, “Search my heart, O God,” inviting Him to delve deeper into our souls so that we may be shaped and molded into His likeness. What a privilege it is to be known by the Creator of the universe! In a world that often seeks recognition and validation, we find our true identity in knowing that God knows us by name.
Today, let us embrace that identity: I am known by God. May it strengthen our faith and embolden us as we walk in the light of His love.
